NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is an innovative, FDA-cleared therapy that can help people who struggle with Major Depressive Disorder even after taking antidepressant medication. TMS is used to target key areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. It helps activate the natural function of the brain’s neurotransmitters using a non-invasive magnetic field. TMS is not ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) and has no risk of cognitive side effects.
For many people, depression symptoms significantly improved or went away after 4 to 6 weeks of treatment.
During a NeuroStar treatment session, a magnet similar in strength to that used in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine is used to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain thought to control mood.
Treatments are daily (Monday- Friday), for a total of 30-38 treatment days. Each treatment lasts approximately 20-35 minutes. Appointment times are typically at the same time throughout the week. To receive the maximum benefit of the TMS Therapy, we advise against missing any treatments. Especially in the first half of the treatment course.
For those suffering from depression who have not benefited from antidepressants, TMS can offer hope!
Neurostar TMS is not a depression drug, therefore it does not have the same side effects that are associated with traditional antidepressant medications. The most common side effect is temporary pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site during therapy that usually resolves within the first week of treatment.
